About the Honoree
Harriet Tregoning is the Director of the D.C. Office of Planning and formerly Governor Glendening’s Special Secretary for Smart Growth. Harriet has a record of achievement in smart growth and community planning. She is playing a leading role at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in crafting the Greater Washington 2050 regional sustainability vision, and integrated transportation and climate solutions. She recently spearheaded the development of the region’s first bus priority corridor plan to compete for a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) stimulus grant.
As the Director of the Washington DC Office of Planning, Harriet works to make DC a walkable, bikeable, vibrant, eminently livable, globally competitive and sustainable city. Her good faith public involvement efforts and responsiveness to concerns has helped to win over skeptical community members to support replanning, revitalization and transit solutions. She is leading the city-wide revamping of 1950s zoning code to support walkable, vibrant communities that reaffirm the role of the human scale and of walking and bicycling.
