Weigh in on Safeway's plans tonight, 7:30pm
Dear Smart Growth Supporters,
You've probably heard about Safeway's proposal to renovate their store at 42nd and Davenport, just off Wisconsin Avenue by Georgetown Day.
Tonight, ANC 3E will discuss the redevelopment proposal during their meeting starting at 7:30 PM at St. Mary's Church (42nd and Fessenden). It's a great chance to share your thoughts with our elected officials.

Safeway is proposing a single story, suburban-style grocery store. While the renovation of the store is needed, Safeway is missing out on a big opportunity to provide even more benefits to our community. The store's location -- in the middle of a walkable neighborhood and right along Wisconsin Avenue -- makes it an ideal site for mixed use development that would enhance our community.
Safeway has built some great stores in urban locations that add to, instead of detracting from, the streetscape and urban fabric. In places like downtown at City Vista and in Wheaton, MD, Safeway has shown great design sensibilities.
We agree with neighborhood residents who are disappointed in Safeway's proposal. The current proposal would be improved by:
- Honoring the intent of DC's land use policy for a mixed use Main Street along Wisconsin Avenue
- Eliminating the surface parking lot
- Adding a green roof and seeking LEED platinum certification
- Offering additional amenities to the community
- Adding bike racks, showers for employees who bike to work, and car sharing spaces
You can read more about Safeway's proposal on Greater Greater Washington and on the official Safeway website.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Perring
